Near Provence, France, an organically grown crop of lemon balm stands out for its cultivation according to the ethical and sustainable farming standards represented by Fair for Life® certification, which emphasizes social equity and ecology. Once lemon balm has been harvested and dried, the plants are delivered to Groupe Berkem’s facilities, where they enter an aqueous extraction and filtration process producing a concentrated powder.

Science

Traditional use

Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional practices, dating back over 2,000 years, for relieving mild mental stress and promoting restful sleep. Thanks to its reputation for calmness, it has long been a popular botanical for promoting emotional balance and relaxation.

Scientific literature

The beneficial properties of lemon balm are linked to its rich phytochemical profile, notably:
– phenolic compounds, such as rosmarinic acid,
– flavonoids such as quercetin,
– triterpenes, including ursolic acid.

Several in vitro and in vivo studies have explored the mechanisms of action of lemon balm. Notably, rosmarinic acid has been shown to:
– inhibit GABA-transaminase, potentially enhancing GABAergic activity for stress and anxiety modulation.
– influence the monoaminergic system, which plays a role in mood regulation.

These scientific findings support the traditional use of lemon balm as a calming agent and highlight its potential in applications related to mood and stress.
