Application of freeze-drying in cosmetics

This drying technology is used for its many properties in fields as diverse as agri-food, nutraceuticals and life sciences.  The cosmetics industry is also concerned and can reap many benefits from freeze-drying.

Freeze-drying plant extracts

Plant extracts are ingredients used in the formulation of cosmetics and are obtained through the plant extraction process. Plants are chosen for their properties, which provide different benefits depending on the type of cosmetic product to be formulated.

Freeze-drying seaweed

Marine plants such as seaweed are coveted ingredients in the cosmetics industry, as they contain many benefits. Seaweed is particularly rich in nutrients, which is why it is used by the agri-food, cosmetic and nutraceutical industries.

Freeze-drying surfactants

Surfactants are used to solubilize two immiscible phases (water and fats). They are a key ingredient in cosmetic formulations. As well as stabilizing mixtures, they have technological properties that are essential for cosmetic formulations (solubilizing, foaming, wetting, etc.).

Freeze-drying pigments

Cosmetic pigments are used to change the color or improve the visual appearance of a liquid or solid product. They can be of synthetic, animal, plant or mineral origin.

Freeze-drying polymers

Polymers can be of synthetic or natural origin. They are used extensively in the cosmetics industry, as they enable new properties to be added to products (film-forming, moisturizing, emollient, gel-forming, water-resistant, etc.).

Advantages of freeze-drying in cosmetics

  • When raw materials used to formulate cosmetics are freeze-dried, they become stable against degradation agents such as heat or moisture. The water in the raw materials is removed, improving their long-term preservation and stability
  • This low-temperature drying process preserves the active ingredients naturally present. Freeze-drying does not alter the product’s initial properties in any way
  • Freeze-dried raw materials have a much higher concentration of nutrients thanks to the dehydration stage
  • The freeze-drying process preserves the bioavailability of active ingredients
